Rameswaram is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India, known for its connection to the Ramayana and for being home to the magnificent Ramanathaswamy Temple. Part of the pilgrimage experience here involves bathing in the 22 holy wells, or kunds. These wells are believed to cleanse sins and purify the soul, each holding its own spiritual significance and tied to unique legends. Below is an introduction to the kunds, their names, and some essential tips for your visit.

The Legend

After defeating the demon king Ravana, Lord Rama sought to cleanse himself of the sin of killing a Brahmin. In response to his prayers, the sea god created 22 sacred kunds, which are believed to possess divine powers.

These 22 kunds represent the 22 arrows used by Lord Rama in battle. Each one symbolizes a different aspect of purification.

2. Savithri Theertham – Removes obstacles and sorrow.

3. Gayathri Theertham – Brings peace.

Tips for Visiting the 22 Kunds in Rameswaram

a. Get in line: There’s usually a queue for Kund Snan, so be prepared to wait a bit. Additionally, the entry ticket is typically around ₹50-₹100.

b. Skip the queue: After buying your ticket, you can pay around ₹500 to a staff member who will take you to all the kunds and pour water over you, saving you from queuing at each one.

c. Bring a change of clothes: You’ll want to change into something dry afterward, as it can get a bit chilly. Also, don’t forget to bring a small microfiber towel. 

d. Get a phone cover: Consider using a waterproof phone cover if you plan to capture videos of the Kund Snan, as water is poured over you in the midst of a crowd. As a result, your phone will definitely get wet, so take precautions to protect it.

My Personal Experience

Visiting the kunds in Rameswaram felt like stepping into an ancient ritual. In addition, the cool water, the quiet prayers around me, and the deep sense of reverence made the experience profound.
